The school of visionAn unconventional painter from Central Switzerland, it has been more than 25 years since the work of Hans Emmenegger was made available to a larger audience. An important painter, always mentioned alongside Hodler and Böcklin, he created an extensive oeuvre. This exhibition catalogue - incidentally the only available publication - presents 166 of his works. A particular aspect of Emmenegger's landscapes and still lifes, and of some of his nudes and animal and architectural representations, is a certain melancholy, conveyed by his images and answering his desire for the »magnificently desolate and forlorn landscape« of Central Switzerland. To go even further, the hills, the bald trees, the barren snowmelts and shady forest glades and sunspots might be perceived as a precursor to the recent realistic paintings, for instance, by Franz Gertsch or Gerhard Richter.
