España, siglo XVII. El Imperio español se tambalea azuzado por los ataques de otras potencias europeas. Francia, Inglaterra, Holanda o Portugal ven en la decadencia de la dinastía de los Austrias la oportunidad de asaltar los territorios españoles avivando, incluso, los belicosos ánimos de zonas como Nápoles, Cataluña o Flandes. En este momento convulso, durante la regencia de la minoría de edad de Carlos II, el Hechizado, en el que la burguesía adquiere cada vez mayor poder sobre la nobleza y la Iglesia y las intrigas palaciegas debilitan a la Corona, comienzan a sucederse una serie de crímenes en la ciudad de Zafra, bastión del ducado de Feria, que amenaza con desestabilizar el orden imperante.

Seventeenth-century Spain. The imperial power is under siege by its European rivals. France, England, Holland and Portugal are taking advantage of the tottering Hapsburg dynasty to strike at the monarchy's far-flung territories and fan the flames of rebellion closer to home in Naples, Catalonia and Flanders. Under the regency of the young King Charles II, "the Bewitched," the bourgeoisie are gaining more power over the nobility and the Church, and palace intrigues are chipping away at the legitimacy of the Crown. In these already tumultuous times, a series of crimes shakes the city of Zafra, the seat of the Duke of Feria, further destabilizing the imperial status quo. A mysterious assailant is murdering municipal officials one by one, with no apparent motive.

At court in Madrid, Leonarda, an intelligent and intrepid traveler from Flanders, meets the Jesuit priest Father Beltrán. Together, they search for the killer by following clues concealed in biblical psalms, where the blood of martyrs is transmuted into the blood of the innocent.
