Die christlichen Kirchen in Ost und West haben geschichtlich eine bedeutsame Rolle beim Aufbau und bei der Ausgestaltung von Gesellschaften gespielt. Auch heute noch verstehen sie sich als wichtige Mitgestalter sozialer Strukturen. Jedoch scheint es innerhalb der Kirchen teilweise an einem Konsens darüber zu fehlen, wie sie sich in einen gesellschaftlichen Diskurs einbringen sollen. Reicht es aus, auf das weitgehend geklärte Verhältnis zwischen Kirche und Staat zu vertrauen? Wie kann die Kirche ihre Sendung erfüllen, ohne die Welt außerhalb ihres rechtlich geschützten Raums anderen zu überlassen? Welche Erwartungen werden heute an die Kirche gerichtet?
