Description

Warner (1829-1900) was an American essayist, novelist and friend of Mark Twain with whom he co-authored the novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today (1873). He travelled widely and consequently published a large number of travel books, lectured frequently and had an active interest in prison reform, city park supervision and other movements for the public good. He first attracted attention wih his reflective sketches 'My Summer in a Garden' (1870), which appeared in The Hartford Courant of which he was co-editor, and 'Backlog Studies' (1872) established him as a genial, mildly humourous essayist. In 1884 he joined the editorial staff of Harper's Magazine, progressing from 'The Editor's Drawer' to 'The Editor's Study'. Towards the end of his career Warner studied the rise and fall of a great family fortune through a trilogy of serious novels - 'A Little Journey in the World' (1889), 'The Golden House' (1894), and 'That Fortune' (1899).
