Description

Presenting the catalogue from Vel?zquez's Fables, the exhibition which the Prado Museum is celebrating its recent enlargement. An in-depth exploration of the Seville-born master's facet as a painter of stories, the exhibition brings together 28 works by Vel?zquez, along with 24 additional works by other artists. This meticulous edition is a descriptive catalogue including illustrations of all the works appearing in the show, accompanied by texts providing historical and creative context. \n\nThe 52 works in the exhibition depic subjects ranging from biblical history to mythology or the classical world and aim to showcase the level of originality Vel?zquez achieved in them, his striking technical versatility and the evolution of his art over a career spanning more than four decades. To this end, Vel?zquez's works are placed side by with works by other artists, allowing viewers to appreciate the artist's response to such external creative stimuli. Among these works are sculptures by Mart?nez Montas and Gregorio Fern?ndez, paintings by earlier artists such as Titian and Caravaggio, works by other great Spanish artists of Vel?zquez's own generation and its immediate forebears, such as El Greco, Ribera and Zurbar?n, and pieces by some of the leading non-Spanish painters of the day, such as the Flemish painter Rubens, the French artists Poussin and Claude Lorrain or the Italians Guercino and Guido Reni.
