For a mother, the loss of a child is perhaps the most devastating experience possible. Having coped with the stillbirth of my first son seven months into the pregnancy, I thought I had felt deep hurt and unbelievable loss. However, what I was to go through with my firstborn daughter twenty-one years later was an even darker experience, a taste of living hell, which reached deeper into my very being than I ever could have thought possible.
My daughter survived the ravaging mental illness anorexia nervosa, but only just. She now has a meaningful and healthy existence. However, the fact that age labelled her an adult made getting help a daunting uphill struggle, punctuated with inexperience and fear.
This book was written to show the evil nature of the illness, how it invades the body and becomes all-controlling. It demonstrates the catastrophic effect anorexia has not only on the body but on human relationships, aspirations and life itself. I write it as a mother in the hope that it will help those struggling with the same illness in a family member, close relative or friend to understand the tough love needed to save that precious life.
