Description

The Egoist is a novel written by George Meredith, first published in 1879. The book tells the story of Sir Willoughby Patterne, a wealthy and handsome man who is the heir to a large estate. Sir Willoughby is a self-centered and egotistical man who believes that he is superior to everyone around him. He is engaged to a beautiful and intelligent woman named Constantia Durham, but he is also pursuing other women at the same time. When Constantia discovers his infidelity, she breaks off the engagement and leaves him. Sir Willoughby is left alone and realizes that his egoism has cost him the love of his life. The book explores themes of love, egoism, and the consequences of selfishness. It is a satirical novel that exposes the flaws and weaknesses of the upper-class society in Victorian England. The Egoist is considered one of Meredith's most important works and a classic of English literature. These little scoundrel imps, who have attained to some respectability as the dogs and pets of the Comic Spirit, had been curiously attentive three years earlier, long before the public announcement of his engagement to the beautiful Miss Durham, on the day of Sir Willoughby's majority, when Mrs. Mountstuart Jenkinson said her word of him. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
