“The Boy Named If” wordt voor de Elvis Costello weer de eerste
samenwerking met The Imposters sinds de single 'Purse' uit 2019. Met de
nummers op het album, dat geproduceerd werd door Sebastian Krys en de zanger
zelf, vangt Costello verhalen in dertien snapshots. “That take us from the last days
of a bewildered boyhood to that mortifying moment when you are told to stop acting like
a child -which for most men (and perhaps a few gals too) can be any time in the next
fifty years," vertelt hij over de invalshoek van de liedjes. De naam 'If' uit de
albumtitel staat voor een onzichtbaar vriendje, dat je als kind kon hebben, die alles
over je weet wat je zelf ontkent en die je liet opdraaien voor gebroken vazen of
ramen als je weer stiekem in de woonkamer aan het voetballen was..
