In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck established the Cape Colony which started the advance of European colonialism in Southern Africa. In the subsequent decades and centuries many of the indigenous people were enslaved, expelled or killed. This publication describes a specific group in this history, namely the descendants of settlers and indigenous people who established independent political entities beyond the colonial frontiers.
