Description

Philoctetes is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles in the 5th century BC. The plot revolves around the mythological hero Philoctetes, who was abandoned on the island of Lemnos by his fellow Greeks after being bitten by a snake. Philoctetes possesses the bow and arrows of the famous hero Heracles, which are essential to winning the Trojan War. The Greeks realize they need Philoctetes and send Odysseus and Neoptolemus to retrieve him. However, Philoctetes is filled with anger and resentment towards the Greeks for abandoning him and refuses to help them. Through a series of events, Neoptolemus develops a bond with Philoctetes and convinces him to return to the Greek camp. The play explores themes of betrayal, forgiveness, and the power of persuasion. It is considered one of Sophocles' greatest works and a masterpiece of Greek tragedy.NEOPTOLEMUS: And yet I wonder not; for if aright I judge, from angry heaven the sentence came, And Chrysa was the cruel source of all; Nor doth this sad disease inflict him still Incurable, without assenting gods? This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
