Damien looked up and was unsurprised to see how grim Angelos looked. But if the boy took away any of Alanna's strength when she was so vulnerable...

"I would ask for permission to call Lord Aldred out in a duel," Angelos said, just as Damien had feared, "but it's not my place. Not yet – and... not ever unless Alanna wants it done and chooses not to do it herself."

Damien focused again on Alanna. "Do you want to call him out yourself, Alanna? As Adam says, Aldred is too old and... canny... to accept a duel personally. And I'm going to make sure – damned sure – that he knows he can't turn to anyone sworn to me or Genevieve to serve that role. Likely he can find someone..."

"And I would stand for you," the King found himself saying grimly. "Assuming you chose not to do it yourself, nor had someone else you preferred."

Adam snorted as Alanna – and Angelos – gave Damien a startled look. "And by he'll do it, he means I will. Since it's a Champion's job to stand for his king in duels. As I thought we established clearly a few months ago."
