The life and public career of John Hay, whose public life began as secretary to President Abraham Lincoln. He then became assistant Secretary of State, Ambassador to England, and finally, United States Secretary of State. He was responsible for negotiating the USs "Open Door" policy with China, and the Panama Canal treaty in Central America.
