To seal off the landing of seaborne troops on D-Day, the Allied command decided to drop three airborne divisions on either flank of the assault sector. So, to the east, British 6th Airborne Division was assigned a mission to capture bridges over the Orne, blow up those over the Dives, knock out a German battery, and repel any German counter-attacks liable to sweep away this frail bridgehead.
This is the daring piece of military action recalled in detail in this book. Divided in two sections, it begins by recounting the arrival of the paratroops and airborne troops brought over in gliders during the night of 5 to 6 June. Among other things, we read of the spectacular capture of the bridges over the Orne, including the taking of the famous «Pegasus Bridge» immortalized in the film «The Longest Day».
The second part of the book recounts the division's hard-fought battle throughout D-Day to repel the German counter-attacks.
